Why You May Feel More Emotional in Spring – A Traditional Chinese Medicine Perspective
Why Spring Can Feel Emotionally Turbulent
The days are finally getting longer, the air feels softer, and we're beginning to see the first buds on the trees. Spring is a time of renewal and hope — yet for many of us, this season can also feel surprisingly turbulent.
You might have noticed feeling a bit more anxious, irritable, or emotionally fragile lately. If you have, please know you are not alone. There is a very logical reason for this from a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) perspective.
In Chinese medicine, we look at the world through the lens of five elements. Spring is ruled by the Wood element — and understanding this can bring real comfort and clarity.
The Energy of the Wood Element
Think of a seed bursting through the soil, or a tree pushing its branches toward the sun. Wood energy is all about growth, expansion, and upward movement. This energy is beautiful — it gives us motivation and vision. But just like a sapling can be bent by a strong wind, this powerful upward energy can easily become stuck.
The Liver: Your Body's General
The organ connected to the Wood element and the Spring season is the Liver. While we know its physical job of detoxifying the body, in Chinese medicine, its spirit is to ensure the smooth flow of everything — including our emotions.
The Liver is often called the "General" of the body. When the Liver is happy and healthy, our emotions flow smoothly. We can express our feelings, adapt to change, and feel decisive and kind.
But in spring, just as nature is pushing energy upward and outward, our own Liver Qi is also surging. If there is even a small blockage — from stress, a poor diet, or unresolved emotions — this powerful surge gets stuck. This is what we call Stagnant Liver Qi.
Imagine a river suddenly flooded with spring rains. If the riverbed is clear, water flows freely. But if there are logs and debris in the way, the water backs up and causes chaos.
What Stagnant Liver Qi Feels Like
- Irritability and Frustration — Feeling easily annoyed or having a short fuse.
- Anxiety and Worry — A feeling of being "wound up" or unable to relax.
- Mood Swings — Feeling fine one moment and down or angry the next.
- Depression — A sense of being stuck, unable to move forward.
- Physical Signs — Neck tension, headaches, difficulty sleeping (especially 1–3 AM), or PMS flare-ups.
How We Can Navigate This Season Together
The goal isn't to fight this spring energy, but to help it flow smoothly. Here are a few gentle suggestions to support your Liver and your emotional health.
1. Move Your Body Gently
The Liver loves movement. Gentle stretching, walking in nature, yoga, or even dancing in your kitchen helps get that Qi moving.
2. Eat for Spring
The Liver appreciates fresh, green things — leafy greens, sprouts, peas, artichokes. Try adding a squeeze of lemon or lime to your water. The sour taste helps calm excess Liver energy.
3. Create Space for Emotions
If you feel irritable, it's okay. Acknowledge it: "I am feeling frustrated right now." Naming the feeling and taking a few deep breaths can prevent energy from getting more stuck. Journaling helps too.
4. Say "No" When You Can
The Wood element makes us want to say yes to everything. It's perfectly okay to protect your peace and give yourself permission to rest.
A Seasonal Tune-Up
If you are feeling particularly stuck, this is a perfect time for an acupuncture session. We can identify where the energy is blocked and help guide it back into smooth, healthy flow. Many people find that just one or two sessions during this seasonal transition can make a world of difference.
A Note for This Season
Spring is a season of immense potential, but it asks us to be flexible and gentle with ourselves. If you've been feeling more emotional than usual, please see it not as a weakness — but as a sign that your body is responding to the powerful call of the natural world.
By listening to it and offering it a little extra care, we can move through this season with more ease and grace.
Wishing you a peaceful and vibrant spring!
