A Lesson in the Grammar of Emotions

In light of World Heart Day on September 29th, we would like to explore the topic of heart health, and how it links to our emotions, and above all, the wondrous technique called Emotional Grammar, that allows us in-depth understanding of how emotions govern our actions and health.

Emotions.

We have always associated them with heart. Children books depict the heart as the place of residence for the emotions, and from where the emotions arise. Lovers feel the emotional turmoil and stabbing love-pain right in the heart. And if you are the type of person to show emotions easily, you are told that you “wear your heart on your sleeve”. So where does the connection come from? One explanation is that even though emotions are mostly centered in the brain, adrenaline is pumped straight to the heart when we feel a strong emotional rush. Hence the accelerated heart beat and the feeling. However if there is one thing I learnt during my session of Emotional Grammar, it is that emotions hide in many places, and the heart is just one of those.

If you want to learn more about emotions, and how they govern our actions, Richard Wickes is your man.

Yuen Method, Cranio sacral and myofascial release practitioner, clearly this is a man with a deep understanding and interest for the human body and the human experience. And he has taken a deep dive into the heart of emotions and identifying how they affect our words, feelings and consequently the way we live.

Richard Wickes has authored a method called “Emotional Grammar”, to help people get better in touch with themselves and release repressed emotions.

The loss of his daughter to suicide in 2015 was his driving motivation to understanding how depression and self-harm can arise from suppressed emotions. The fear and shame we have in connecting to our emotions and uncomfortable thoughts can indeed be deadly.

So where do these emotions reside? It’s so strange that they are hard to find. The cause of so much pain and suffering seem to be hidden. Hiding in plain sight is not something new. Many discoveries have been made by seeing what is known as the elusive obvious. It’s so elusive that when we realize it is there we can hardly believe we didn’t see it before.

Emotional Grammar stems from the elusive obvious. Each word we say or think is connected to a feeling. Actually the word anger is shorthand for various complex arrangements of physical activation. We all know the word angry can have many shades and nuances.

“It is amazing and simple” is a typical comment after a session.

The method is just like emotions, simple and complex, superficial and deep. And the scientific basis for Emotional Grammar is sound, found by the work of Prof. Antonio Damasio, Prof. Daniel Siegel.

Richard is coaching this mindful non-manipulative approach and has helped many people overcome limiting beliefs, fears and opening dreams, visions and directions. He is also available for corporate and school training.

Emotional Grammar made me realize a lot of new things about emotions.

Contrary to cultural beliefs, emotions can actually be felt in different parts of the body. And they can lie there for a long, long time, a dormant volcano waiting to erupt back to life. When Richard asked me to try a session with him, I really had no idea what to expect. We delved deeper into my topic of choice, confusion, which I would describe like the Hong Kong smog clouding my thoughts. And when I resurfaced at the end of the session, the smog had lifted. It wasn’t so much a cure, as it was a shift in perspective. An all-round clarity that arose from understanding where the emotions lay and how to be with them.
