4 Meditation Techniques to Heal, Grow and Find Bliss

Meditation is one of the most popular techniques to improve focus and attention, and be more connected to your inner self. Many studies show how it benefits not just our emotions and psychological state, but even our physical state. Meditation is a technique used for thousands of years to develop awareness of the present moment.

Meditation can surely help us find peace, calmness and harmony. It can also help reduce stress as proven by other clinical research. There is no right or wrong method when it comes to meditation. However, it is helpful to practice the technique that works best for you or meets what your mind, body and spirit needs.

In our experience these are the 4 most popular meditation techniques for you to try and see which one is for you.

  • Mindfulness Meditation

Originating from the teachings of Buddhism, mindfulness meditation is the most used or practiced form of meditation nowadays. This type of meditation uses observation to create awareness.

During a mindfulness meditation session you notice and attend to your thoughts without judging them. You just observe your thoughts and be mindful of any thought pattern. When a thought comes up, you notice and observe it and then gently put it away. Mindful meditation is simple and can be done by yourself and without a guide, for a short or longer period of time.

  • Focused Meditation

Focus meditation is for those who truly want to increase their concentration. It is effective as the practice involves a meditator focusing or concentrating on any of your five senses, for example your breath, what you hear or what you see. Focusing on your breath is more inward oriented, but if you practice focusing on your hearing or sight, you could listen to a specific music instrument like a gong or you can stare at a flame standing in front of you, or just count beads.

Focused meditation sounds simple but beginners often find it rather hard at first. The challenge with this meditation is to notice when your mind wanders and train it to come back to your thoughts and focus.

  • Movement meditation

Qi gong, yoga and Tai Chi are among those practices that would be called movement meditation. In this meditation practice, your teacher will help you leverage your movements to bring you to deeply connect with your body. It is popular and effective to those who are eager to find peace and at the same time have body awareness.

When practicing movement meditation, it’s important to build a certain routine into your movements so the body and mind can relax and fully experience the movement as a meditation practice.

  • Transcendental Meditation

Transcendental Meditation is a method that attracts a lot of clinical research in the scientific community. Founded by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, transcendental meditation is specifically developed to quieten your mind and then induce a state of peace and calmness. As it uses mantra, this practice is best guided through a certified meditation practitioner to fully experience its benefits.
